  • Russia's Mir Space Station had been in orbit for over 14 years. The first element of the station was launched on February 20, 1986. It was a third-generation Russian station. During the years Mir was orbiting earth, it had been home to 62 people from 24 crews, from more than a dozen countries including Afghanistan, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Japan, Syria, United Kingdom, and the United States. One of these, Russian cosmonaut Dr.Valeri Polyakov, has spent a total of 22 months in space; and holds the record for the longest consecutive days in space (14 months - January 8,1994 to March, 1995).
